3D Shape Hunt: Identifying Parts of a Shape (vertices, face, edge)

Grades: 2nd Grade, 1st Grade, Kindergarten
Subjects: Math, STEAM

Student Instructions

OBJECTIVES: 1. To begin to identify and describe 3D shapes 2. To begin to use appropriate mathematical terms to describe 3D shapes. SUPPORTING ADULTS: You can support your child by using the correct terms such as vertices, vertex, edges, faces, straight sides. Ask you child "How many vertices/corners did you count?" and "How many faces/flat sides did you count?" and "If the shape has xx vertices and xx faces, what shape is it?" INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Tap add to begin learning engagement. 2. Watch the Brainpop video on page 1 to learn more about 3D or solid objects. 3. Go for a 3D shape hunt. Look for at least three 3D shapes around your house. 4. Click the photo button and take a picture of the 3D shape you found. 5. Label the parts of the shape you found. 6. Use the drawing to trace the EDGES of the 3D shape - count the edges out loud! 7. Use the drawing to make dots on the VERTICES - count the vertices out loud! 8. Count the number of faces out loud! 9. Use the mic to share your thinking. Explain what shape you found and how many edges, faces, and vertices.
