This activity guides students through building a simple flashlight using a coin/button battery, LED, aluminum conductor tape, and paper. The lesson focuses on following a diagram, creating a closed circuit, and using observations to explain why the LED lights. Prepare materials: 1 coin/button battery per student, 1 small LED per student, strips of aluminum conductor tape, paper or cardstock, scissors, and tape. Remind students of safe handling of LEDs and small batteries; do not swallow batteries and handle with teacher supervision. Use the assessment questions to check students' factual understanding. For open-ended responses: a high-quality answer for the paragraph question explains how the battery, conductor tape, and LED work together, mentions a closed circuit, and gives an example of a change that would stop the light (e.g., breaking the tape). For the multimedia show-it task, a strong response clearly shows the circuit, demonstrates the LED lighting, and narrates or labels the parts. Grade open-ended work as correct if the student accurately describes or demonstrates the circuit and identifies the roles of parts; mark incorrect if key ideas are missing or incorrect (e.g., confusing battery and LED roles).
