An ONSET is the consonant or consonant blend at the beginning of a word that comes before the first vowel. It can be 1-3 letters long. (Example: in the word cash, the onset is "c". In the word flash, the onset is "fl". In the word splash, the onset is "spl".) A RIME begins with the first vowel and continues to the end of the syllable. (Example: in the words cash, flash, and splash, the rime for all three is "ash"). DIRECTIONS FOR ACTIVITY: 1. For each word, you can click the speaker to hear the word read. 2.
