How does a space telescope send information back to Earth? What is a mirror used for on a space telescope? We know that space telescopes collect the light from far away stars and planets that we can't see with our own eyes (even when we use a telescope to look at the night sky). The Hubble Space Telescope has been in space since 1990 and now NASA has launched the James Webb Space Telescope on Christmas day (2021)! We will explore the difference between these two space telescope's mirrors and make our own space telescope mirror out of various shapes. Parents π¨βπ©βπ¦: Allow your child to share what they have learned at school or if this activity is for home, read and work through the pages together. Working together allows for reflective and critical thinking and to communicate our understanding and knowledge. LEARNING TARGET π―: I can explain a space telescope mirror and how different shapes are better in making a space telescope mirror. 1. Read and/or listen to each page. If you need help, have a classmate, parent or an adult help you. 2. Make sure your answers explain what you've learned! 3. When you are finished, click the button.
On Dec. 25, 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope is finally on its way to L2! Please visit the NASA James Webb Space Telescope STEM Toolkit for more ideas and information: https://www.nasa.gov/stem/nextgenstem/webb-toolkit.html *The lesson plan to go with this activity: https://www.stem.org.uk/rxfn99 *More information about the James Webb Space Telescope: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/james-webb-space-telescope/en/ *This Seesaw activity can be used for all elementary grades, adjust where needed to fit your grade level!* These competencies are from the British Columbia education website: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/ CORE COMPETENCIES: Communication: To share and connect ideas with others' ideas Thinking: Observe and to identify problems and ask questions BIG IDEAS: Kindergarten: The motion of objects depend are their properties, repeating elements in patterns can be identified Grade 1: Light and its properties can be changed, repeating elements in patterns can be identified Grade 2: Forces influence the motion of an object, regular change in patterns can be identified CURRICULAR COMPETENCIES: -Demonstrate a curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world -Make and record simple measurement using informal or non-standard methods -Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial and symbolic forms CONTENT COMPETENCIES: -K: effects of pushes/pull on movement, repeating patterns -1: properties of light depend on it source and the object with which they interact, repeating patterns with multiple elements -2: physical ways of changing materials, repeating and increasing patterns
