Materials: Hundred Charts (1 for each player) Cuisenaire Rods 2 dice 2 or more players To Play: 1) Player 1 Rolls the dice and adds them together to find the sum. 2) He or she then finds a Cuisenaire Rod (or 2) that matches the total, and places it at the beginning of his/her 100 chart. 3) Player 2 takes a turn rolling the dice and placing Cuisenaire Rod(s) on his/her 100 Chart. 4) Players continue to take turns, filling their 100 charts with blocks. The winner is the first player to reach 100!
When adding a number that goes beyond a ten (for example, 7+5), players should try to determine how to decompose the number so that they make the ten, and then add the remainder. For example, when adding 5 to 7, players should break the 5 into a 3 and 2. Players who struggle to make 10 mentally can use the white units to make the total. Eventually, this game should help students develop the number sense to easily bridge 10.
