Explicitly teaching Tier 2 vocabulary - words that students see frequently across subjects - is essential for students to engage fully with grade level texts and concepts. Once students have completed this graphic organizer for various words, research suggests giving them opportunities to use them with peers, in writing activities, or in games. Suggested scaffolds for ELLs: -Make sure vocabulary words are appropriate for each student's proficiency level -Help the student connect the English word with the word in their home language -Give the definition in the student's home language -Offer a visual definition in addition to a verbal definition -Provide sentence starters CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.6 Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level.
