Archeology, Middens and Garbology

Grades: 7th Grade
Subjects: History

Student Instructions

Archaeologists explore and excavate ancient sites, looking for clues about what life was like in ancient times. It isn't unusual for an archaeologist to come across pits of garbage, known as ‘middens’ which reveal so much about the lifestyles of the past. Archaeologists find ancient Aboriginal middens very interesting, especially because we still don't know a great deal about Australia's ancient past. TASK: 1. Imagine you are an archaeologist who has discovered what seems to be an Aboriginal midden. Write down three questions you would like to find out about the midden and the people who created it. 2. Use the Fact Sheet about Aboriginal middens to answer the following questions a) What artefact (objects) might you expect to find in an Aboriginal midden? b) Where are you most likely to discover an Aboriginal midden? c) Why are Aboriginal middens important?
