Using the information provided from the 9 weeks assessments. Use and
to record progress. Common note mistakes are:
• Not recognizing that there is only one atom present if there is no subscript
• Not knowing that some elements are represented by capital and lowercase letter
• Not adding atoms of the same element if they are in the same compound (e.g., HOH has two hydrogen
atoms and one oxygen atom)
• Making multiplication errors to distribute the subscript after a parenthesis
• Not adding atoms when a chemical formula has the same element in two places
• Misinterpreting properties that are not the result of a new substance being formed as evidence of a chemical reaction (e.g., color change because of added color, temperature change because of a hot plate, presence of gas in reactants)
• Thinking that the gas produced by boiling a substance is evidence of a chemical change
• Confusing a change of state and a chemical change
