Student Instructions

Today we’ll hear about a man named John the Baptist, who had a very important job from God. He was a messenger, and helped the people of Israel see that we must prepare our hearts for Jesus. St John the Baptist is extra special to us because he is the Patron Saint of our School and during this month we will celebrate his feast day on 24th June. First discuss the following with an adult: What does it mean to prepare for something? If your hero was coming over to your house, what are some things you would have to do to prepare for his/her visit? What ways are there of getting a message to people? Now enjoy listening to the story of St John the Baptist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFz5OP7388w From the story we learned that Jesus came to his cousin John and asked to be baptised. John knew that there was something very special about Jesus and was reluctant to Baptise him at the first. When Jesus came up from the water John heard the Voice of God saying: "This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased." The Bible says that God’s spirit of peace came in the form of a white dove. This event has great significance in Jesus’ life because from that moment – Jesus realised that he was God’s chosen one – and that he had his own message to bring to mankind. Activity Create your own Jesus Baptism spinner: Follow the instructions attached to the template You will need: Colouring pencils, scissors, glue, sellotape, a straw First cut out the picture and/or free draw the template Then fold down the middle and turn over. Sellotape a straw to the middle of one half of the sheet and glue round the edges of the other half of the sheet. Glue the halves together, then colour in After that swizzle the straw between your hands and watch the dove appear over Jesus' head! Extension: Discuss your own Baptism with your family - look out some photos from your special day. Can you find the 5 symbols of Baptism in the pictures? (gown, Holy Water, oil, the cross, candle light)
