Students create an acrostic poem using the words 'Friends' or ‘Good Friend’. Each stem from the acrostic poem assists the audience in better understanding what it means to be a good friend. 1. Review the structure of an acrostic poem. Use a topic of choice or an area of interest as an example. Guide students to choose a common topic and co-construct an example on the board. 2. Let students know that they are going to be creating an acrostic poem on being a good friend. 3. Pose a question: when you think of 'Friendship’, what comes to mind? Brainstorm ideas on the board. 4. Explain the two choices 'Friends' or 'Good Friend' 5. Once students are finished, they may colour, add pictures and design their page. 6. Write the word ‘FRIENDSHIP’ on butcher’s paper vertically (just like an acrostic poem). Ask students to share what they came up with for their individual poems. Using the student's ideas, create a common classroom acrostic poem based on the word ‘FRIENDSHIP’. Hang this poster in the classroom. Supporting Strategies: Allow students to use concepts from the classroom brainstorming to support ideas. Use the word 'Friends' Extension Strategies: Request the use of sophisticated vocabulary when considering the first word of each row. Use the words 'Good Friends'. Reflection question: What is one thing that you’re going to change or do differently after this activity?
